Project CAELUS (Care & Equity – Healthcare Logistics UAS Scotland) is a 16-partner consortium run by AGS Airports, aimed at developing and the UK’s first national drone distribution network to facilitate more efficient transport of essential medicines, biological samples, organs and other medical supplies throughout Scotland.

The drone delivery network will connect healthcare and medical facilities, pathology laboratories, distribution centres and GP surgeries across the country to facilitate more equitable access to essential medical supplies for urban and rural areas.

As part of its role in the consortium, Intelsius designed and developed ORCA Drone, a high-performance multi-use temperature-controlled packaging system equipped with real-time temperature and location tracking, allowing payloads to be tracked anywhere and at any time.

Project CAELUS has conducted several successful flight trials where samples were transported across Scotland using drones. The first of those flight trials occurred in Glasgow in November 2023, with subsequent flight trials taking place between Lothian and Borders and Arran and Ayrshire respectively.

In August 2024, the Lothian and Borders flight trial took place alongside the first-ever CAELUS Stakeholder Event, at which consortium members and other key stakeholders shared valuable insights into their roles in the project.

Intelsius Product Design Engineer Tess Bell attended the flight trial to provide on-site support on the maintenance of the Intelsius packaging and answer any stakeholder questions.

As a representative of Intelsius, Tess also provided insights on the importance of the chain of custody during the transport of temperature-sensitive samples and the challenges of transporting dangerous goods.

The event was attended by Innovate UK, NHS bodies, Transport Scotland and other stakeholders including airspace users, pilots, emergency services, agencies and other governmental agencies.

Flight Trials from Arran to Ayrshire

The next successful flight trials were conducted on the Isle of Arran in October where laboratory samples transported by drone for the first time across a body of water. Previously, this route relied on the use of ferries which presented their own challenges in terms of reliability and efficacy. The drone route would reduce transport time from 1 hour to 20 minutes and provide more regular and reliable delivery times.

Tess was on-site once again to provide packaging support during the trials and to advise on the chain of custody and the transport of dangerous goods.

“The flight trials on the Isle of Arran provided valuable feedback about the usability of Intelsius packaging to inform future decisions on design development and user guides. It was helpful to witness the handling of the packaging in real time and how medical personnel interacted with it. We gained valuable insights which we can use to streamline the transport process further,” Tess said.
