Intelsius Ireland participated in this year’s International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) initiative, organised in partnership with Ocean Conservancy. The initiative is an international effort in which organisations and individuals from around the globe volunteer to remove trash and debris from waterways and beaches. Since its inception, the ICC has had more than 18 million volunteers clean up more than 380 million pounds of waste from the ocean.
Ocean Conservancy works to protect the ocean from global threats, creating a platform by uniting policy, people, and science to create solutions for a sustainable ocean.
Clean Coasts, part of Irish An Taisce, organised Ireland’s cleanup event this year.
Four Intelsius Ireland employees covered a distance of 5.8km along the beach of Cromane. The bay at Cromane is a large producer of mussels and oysters, harvesting approximately 8,000 tonnes a year. There is also fishing industry activity just a few hundred metres away from the beach.
Intelsius Ireland’s Managing Director Marie Walsh said on the cleanup activities,
“Living on a small island in the Atlantic, we all feel a strong connection to our seas and want to help keep them clean. The annual ICC is a great way to connect with our community, go on the ground, and do our part to keep waste from our seas.
Besides debris from the fishing industry, we also collected items like plastic bottles, caps and single-use lids. With our business being located in Killarney, where single use cups have been banned, we hope that more towns and cities follow this example so we can keep our waterways clean.
The ICC cleanup efforts will be the first of an ongoing annual commitment by Intelsius Ireland. The next cleanup session is set for 20th September 2025.
