At Intelsius, our mission has always been to create innovative, high-performance packaging systems that don’t just meet regulatory and performance demands, but also deliver real environmental impact. That’s why we recently partnered with ClimatePartner, a global leader in carbon footprint analysis, to better understand the life cycle emissions of several of our most-used packaging systems. The findings offer a compelling case for moving away from single-use packaging and toward smarter, sustainable alternatives.

ORCA Multi-Use: A Smart Investment for Frequent Shippers

One of the key insights came from a head-to-head comparison between our ORCA Multi-Use system and a traditional single-use EPS-based shipper.

  • ORCA Multi-Use (VIP-insulated, reusable): 42.69 kg CO₂e over a full cradle-to-grave life cycle.
  • Single-use EPS system (expanded polystyrene insulated): 15.72 kg CO₂e per use.

At first glance, the ORCA’s carbon footprint seems significantly higher, but that’s only if you use it once. The power of ORCA lies in its multi-use design, engineered for up to five years of repeated use. The more you ship, the lower your per-shipment carbon footprint becomes.

In contrast, EPS-based single-use systems are discarded after just one use, usually heading straight to landfill. So, while the initial carbon cost of producing an ORCA unit is higher, frequent shippers can drastically reduce emissions over time—and reduce waste by reusing the same system again and again.

GreenTherm: A Better Way to Ship with Dry Ice

We also examined dry ice shippers, specifically comparing our GreenTherm solution, made from 100% recyclable materials, with a conventional EPS-based dry ice shipping system.

  • GreenTherm (fully recyclable): 4.87 kg CO₂e
  • EPS-based dry ice shipper: 6.13 kg CO₂e

Not only does GreenTherm offer a 21% reduction in carbon emissions, but it also removes the headache of end-of-life disposal. Every component of GreenTherm is designed to be recycled in standard household cardboard/paper recycling streams, simplifying sustainability for our customers.

The Bottom Line: Choose Reusability. Choose Recyclability.

The message from this analysis is clear: when you switch to multi-use or recyclable packaging, the environmental benefits compound with every shipment.

  • If you’re shipping frequently, ORCA Multi-Use offers an obvious route to a lower carbon footprint over time.
  • If you rely on dry ice shipping, GreenTherm provides a lower-carbon, easy-to-recycle alternative to EPS systems.

By making the switch, you’re not only reducing your organisation’s emissions, but you’re also contributing to a more sustainable future for the cold chain industry.

Let’s ship smarter. Let’s ship greener.
