Intelsius has collaborated with international logistics company YSDS Life Science to provide packaging and logistics solutions for the life science industry.

YSDS are a specialist in life science logistics, offering GDP-certified, tailormade solutions for time and temperature sensitive shipments for the research and development, clinical trials, Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs) and commercial supply. YSDS offers bespoke logistics solutions for temperature-sensitive commodities covering a wide range of temperature profiles.

In this article, we speak to Business Unit Director for YSDS Life Science, John Coleman about the logistical and packaging pain points of shipping temperature-sensitive goods, and why YSDS decided to partner with Intelsius.

What temperature ranges do YSDS offer?

YSDS ships products in the following temperature intervals:

  • Incubation (+30 to +37 °C)
  • Controlled room (+15 to +25 °C)
  • Refrigerated (+2 to +8 °C)
  • Frozen (-25 to -15 °C)
  • Dry ice (-78 °C)
  • Cryogenic: (-196 °C)

“We approach each shipment with a tailormade solution applicable on a national and global scale – meaning that we don’t have a one fits all. Our team of specialists regularly handles all temperature intervals from cryogenic temperatures at -196C to incubation temperatures at +40C. Each shipment has a dedicated logistics expert who plans the route, mitigates the risks, and monitors everything from temperature, shock and location, ensuring full visibility door to door,” said John.

What are the shipping requirements for different temperature ranges?

Shipping cargo in the life sciences industry involves a range of temperature requirements which vary based on the type of payload being transported. For example, ATMPs often require ultra low temperatures down to -196C whilst red blood cells are transported in temperatures between +2C – +8C.To safely ship these samples without compromising their integrity, the right packaging is crucial.

Intelsius uses a range of insulation technology to achieve the desired temperature ranges. The high-performance ORCA range utilises advanced phase change materials and vacuum insulated panels (VIP)s to maintain the temperature ranges needed for the safe transport of pharmaceuticals.

For dry ice shipments, the type and size of payload should be considered, as well as if you are using an EPS-based or VIP-based insulation system. Each have their respective benefits.

Intelsius BioTherm Range

The BioTherm solutions are fully compliant with international packaging regulations like IATA, ADR and 49 CFR (DOT). They are pre-qualified to safely ship samples from between 24 to 120 hours and are tested against our demanding High-Performance Dry Ice temperature, 2-8°C profiles and 15-25°C profiles.

Intelsius also test and qualify BioTherm solutions in conjunction with Intelsius Specimen Transport Packaging, to ensure that your samples are safe and maintain their integrity throughout their shipment.

The BioTherm solution is designed specifically to minimise freight costs for customers, without compromising on value and performance of the solution. Fitted with sturdy carry handles and a tongue and groove lid and base to ensure quick and easy assembly, it is an effective, durable and user-friendly packaging option for dry ice shipments.

Why did YSDS choose Intelsius?

“For all of our dry ice shipments, we use Intelsius’ BioTherm solution to successfully keep the product at -78 °C. from pickup to delivery. We have chosen Intelsius as our partner in shipping our clients’ valuable shipments on dry ice because they have quality-assured their products and provide qualification reports so we know how long their solutions maintain the relevant temperature.

Dry ice solutions are one of our biggest subcategories within our Life Science unit, our diverse range of clients with differing shipment sizes posed a challenge for us as it required a number of different partners to cater to the different markets and industry requirements.

We wanted to consolidate and find one partner who was able to understand our need for curated solutions. With Intelsius BioTherm’s range of packaging solutions, we’re able to use one partner to provide logistics solutions unique to our needs.

We needed a globally validated partner for us to deliver a solution that could meet our GDP standard on a global level. By collaborating with Intelsius we ensure that our clients get the highest standard packaging across the board – putting the safety of our clients’ products first.

YSDS is looking forward to continuing our collaboration with Intelsius. Together, we can provide the best possible logistics and packaging solutions for our clients’ dry ice shipments, ensuring the safety and integrity of their product and projects,” John said.
