In September, Intelsius Ireland were involved in an acorn picking activity with Ireland-based organisation Local Roots. Local Roots aims to create more woodland in Ireland through seed and nut collection and subsequent propagation activities, with the goal of creating 100 new native forests in Kerry by 2030.
Our Irish team represented Intelsius and successfully collected 15kg worth of acorn nuts from Killarney National Park for the purposes of propagation.
Local Roots have a seed collecting license which allows them to collect certain seeds and nuts, according to strict procedures and guidelines. They are given an annual allowance of which can be picked from the Park. In 2025, the allowance is set at 40kg.
A maximum of 8 people were allowed in the acorn picking group to minimise disturbance of the ground and surrounding area.
The collected seeds are distributed and planted throughout the county and country in an effort to reforest woodland areas and increase natural biodiversity.
“It is a privilege to be a part of the seed collection and reforesting movement in Ireland. Local charities, farmers, and even schools take part in this effort. We are happy to represent Intelsius in this endeavour and we intend to continue playing our part in improving the natural biodiversity of our planet,” said Managing Director of Intelsius Ireland Marie Walsh.
